A PNG image (saved on a transparent background) can be inserted into word based projects like LETTERS, BROCHURES, PRESENTATIONS etc. A PNG on a transparent background allows the background colour or texture of the document you are working on to be "visible".

If a PNG image is not saved on a transparent background you will have a white square around the image, blocking out your page background. On the sample image below, see the white square around the African huts? That is a PNG not saved on a transparent background resulting in an undesirable effect.

If the background of your document you are working on was white - you would obviously not see the white square.

In the above image, the MS Office document has a creamy colour background. The image of the african huts is a PNG image but not on a transparent background - thus leaving you with an unwanted and visible white square. Basically it is "blocking out" your document background.

In the above image we used the same PNG image as in the previous example, but the colour of our document background is white - thus the white square around the huts is not visible. The square is there but just not visible.

In the final example, we have inserted the huts, still in PNG format but this time the huts are on a TRANSPARENT background. Allowing the creamy colour of our document background to show through.

Inserting a PNG image into a word document is the same procedure as if you were inserting a JPEG, or GIF for example. The advantages of transparent PNG's are that you are able to change the colour of your backgrounds to suit your needs.

If you were working with a Picture Tube - you would have to have some knowledge on how to work with Paint Shop Pro. Working in Paint Shop Pro you would therefore have to place the tube on the same colour background as your word document and then save it in an image format such as JPEG, GIF, BITMAP etc. for example.

Something to remember is that when you insert an image (be it in any format, png, jpeg, gif, bitmap etc.) into a Word Document and save it to a CD or a Floppy Disc - the image gets saved as well - what this means is that you do not have to have the image on another PC for it to show up should the word document be transferred to the other PC by whatever means - meaning a disc or email.

PNG's are a great feature if you have no knowledge or lack confidence working in Paint Shop Pro or other graphics programs.

I assume you have created your table - click here if you do not know how - select or click in the block in the table where you would like the image to appear - the cursor will remain and that block will flash at you. Then click on INSERT | PICTURE | FROM FILE

Browse to where you have saved your PNG images on your hard drive, open the folder and then select the image you want to insert and click on INSERT

Click on SHADING - (See number 1. in the diagram below). For a larger selection of colours to choose from click on #2. MORE COLORS. For an even greater selection of colours to choose from click on #3. CUSTOM Click on a colour and then click #5. OK.

Now the colour of your table background has changed to the colour that you chose. If you want your page background colour to be the same (or a different colour) follow the next step. Click on FORMAT | BACKGROUND | MORE COLORS (or) FILL EFFECTS and make an appropriate selection.

As you can see from the sample images below, the options are endless. Whatever colour you choose will easily be displayed behind a PNG saved on a transparent layer.
