STEP ONE

In Microsoft Office - Open a new document, create a TABLE by clicking on TABLE / INSERT / TABLE

STEP TWO

Select the number of ROWS and COLUMNS that you would like to have in your table and click on OK. You can always amend the number or rows or columns in a table at a later stage. Just RIGHT CLICK in a cell and you can either MERGE cells together or SPLIT cells into more rows or columns.

STEP THREE

The table is now inserted into your document. If you do not want to have the table lines visible - see the next step.

STEP FOUR

Right click in the table area - then click on BORDERS and SHADING from the pop-up menu.

STEP FIVE

Click on NONE as shown in the diagram below and then click on OK.

STEP SIX

The table lines are greyed out now - they are there just as a guide. If you print your document now, you will not see the table lines. This is how one can achieve a layout for example if you are creating brochures, or newsletters.

You can also change the background colour of individual cells by right clicking in the desired cell - clicking on BORDERS & SHADING and then applying the colour to the CELL only and NOT the entire table.

In the image below - I have changed the colour of each cell individually, by right clicking in the cell and clicking on BORDERS & SHADING and selecting a colour and applying it to the CELL ONLY - as instructed and shown in the image above.
